Units of Sound Practitioner's Course
Units of Sound is an effective multimedia programme for the development of reading and spelling for adults and children (from age 8).
A new online course in two parts.
Part 1
Getting to Know the ProgrammeAn online course providing a detailed introduction to the Units of Sound programme.
Nine discrete modules ending in questionnaires.
A final questionnaire acts as a review of competency.
Part 2
Supporting a StudentExtra Techniques to use with Students. These are unmarked modules but contain useful information which will be needed for the case study. The Coding course is of particular interest if you are unfamiliar with this approach to reading.
The Case Study This is the part of the course that you submit for assessment. You should allow at least 6 months for this part of the course and aim to teach for at least 15 weeks. It should show your complete understanding in the use of the programme and document your progress with student. It is very important that you take time to find a suitable student and discuss this with your tutor before your start.

What are the benefits?
The course will enable the teacher to become confident in using this powerful resource with any learner needing help with decoding.
Course content and structure
The course includes:
• Effective use of the materials for reading, spelling and writing.
• The management and monitoring of students' progress.
• Advice on supporting students at the different stages of the programme with reinforcement activities and other multisensory tools.
• Additional support materials
The whole course involves approximately 10 hours study time and 15 hours teaching time, total approximately 25 hours. Candidates work at their own pace logging in to their own online portal. For Part 2 a case study is required. The case study will be a record of the work with the student over the length of Part 2 of the course and is to be completed within one year of enrolment.
On-line support is available throughout the course.
Will I get an award?
Dyslexia Action Certificate of Completion on submission of a satisfactory case report.
